Mexico's early philatelic popularity sharply declined with the appearance of large quantities of forgeries and reprints in the early 1890's. Much confusion remains. This exhibit surveys the problem as it affects stamps of Mexico's first design, considering: I - Counterfits or faciimiles created between 1865 - 1892 by various printers to fill early demand for space-fillers; II - Reprints created from original and modified plates, including the Gothic Issue, reprints and genuine; III - Forgeries, genuine stamps and other concoctions altered to create more valuable varieties.
